Terms of Service

Unify is an independent, student-built tool for discovering and planning university courses. These Terms of Service (the "Terms") govern your use of the Unify website and its features. By using Unify, or by checking the box indicating that you agree to these Terms, you accept them. If you do not agree, please do not use Unify. Questions can go to getunifyapp@gmail.com.

What Unify is

Unify shows course catalog information, publicly available grade data, student-written reviews, and personalized course suggestions based on the program and coursework you enter. It is a planning aid. It is not a registration system and not a part of any university.

Not official academic advice

Course recommendations, requirement checklists, prerequisites, and the catalog and grade information shown on Unify are provided for general informational purposes only. They may be incomplete, out of date, or incorrect, and they are not a substitute for official academic advising. Before you enroll in, drop, or otherwise rely on any course, confirm requirements with your university's official advisors, degree audit, and registration systems. You are responsible for your own academic decisions, and Unify is not responsible for academic, enrollment, financial, or graduation outcomes that result from use of the service.

No affiliation with universities

Unify is an independent project. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign or any other institution listed on the site. University names, logos, and trademarks belong to their respective owners. Course and grade data are drawn from publicly available catalogs and public datasets and are used for informational purposes.

Reviews and content you submit

If you write a review, you are responsible for its content. You agree that your reviews reflect your own genuine experience, that they are lawful, and that you will not post anything that is false, defamatory, harassing, hateful, or that discloses another person's private information. Reviews represent the individual opinions of the people who write them, not the views of Unify.

You keep ownership of what you write. By submitting a review, you grant Unify a non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free license to host, store, and display it (anonymously to other users) as part of the service. We may decline to publish, edit, or remove content at our discretion, including content that violates these Terms. To report a review or request removal of content, email getunifyapp@gmail.com.

Acceptable use

You agree not to misuse the service. In particular, you will not scrape or bulk-extract data, attempt to breach or circumvent security, reverse engineer the site, impersonate others, or use automated tools to abuse the service or disrupt it for other users.

Accounts

Signing in is optional and is handled through Google. You are responsible for activity that occurs under your account. You can sign out or stop using Unify at any time.

Intellectual property

The Unify name, design, and original software and content are the property of its creator. Course catalog and grade data remain the property of their respective sources. These Terms do not grant you any right to use Unify's branding without permission.

Third-party services

Unify uses Google Firebase (Authentication and Cloud Firestore) to sign you in and to store saved data. Your use of those features is also subject to Google's terms and privacy policies. See our Privacy Policy for how data is handled.

Disclaimer of warranties

Unify is provided on an "as is" and "as available" basis, without warranties of any kind, whether express or implied, including any warranty of accuracy, completeness, reliability, availability, or fitness for a particular purpose, to the maximum extent permitted by law.

Limitation of liability

To the maximum extent permitted by law, Unify and its creator will not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, or consequential damages, or for any academic, enrollment, or financial decisions made in reliance on the service. Your use of Unify is at your own risk.

Indemnification

You agree to indemnify and hold harmless Unify and its creator from any claims or demands arising out of your misuse of the service, the content you submit, or your violation of these Terms.

Changes to these Terms

We may update these Terms from time to time. When we do, the updated version will be posted on this page with a new date above. Significant changes may require you to accept the Terms again before continuing. Continued use of Unify after an update means you accept the revised Terms.

Termination

We may suspend or end access to Unify for anyone who violates these Terms. You may stop using the service at any time. To delete your account data, see the data deletion section of our Privacy Policy.

Governing law

These Terms are governed by the laws of the State of Illinois, United States, without regard to its conflict-of-law rules. Any disputes relating to these Terms or to your use of Unify will be subject to the courts located in Illinois.
